How to connect a Gateway to Insight

To connect your Gateway devices, you need to enable them to connect to your internet router (Wi-Fi) by provisioning each Gateway with login credentials to your network (router).

Prerequisite: Insight Webportal account activated.

Step 1: Download the Provisioning Package

There are two ways to configure and download the provisioning files for each Gateway:

  • Add Gateway devices manually and download the provisioning package in a .zip file - recommended for up to 30 devices.
  • Import the list of devices in bulk in a .CSV file and download the provisioning package in a .zip file recommended for up to 200 devices.

1.1. How to connect multiple devices manually

  1. Log in to Insight Webportal on your desktop.
  2. Under Manage, select Connectivity.
  3. At the top of the page, click Connect Device.
A modal Choose your Device window displays.
  4. Select Gateway and click Next.
  5. In the Name section, click Add Device multiple times to add multiple devices.
  6. For each device, type in the Station Name, Use Case, and Device Name, and click Next.
    The WIFI Connection section displays.
  7. Type in your router's/network's SSID (Network) and Password, and click Next.
    The Provision section displays.
  8. Scan the QR code on the screen to enable your Gateway as a Mass Storage Device.
  9. Click Download to export your Provisioning package in a .zip file.
The provisioning package (.zip) downloads with a provisioning file for each device.
  10. Click Done.
    The Connectivity Devices screen displays.

Note: If you do not want to expose your network's password, you can leave the Password field empty and add the password for each SSID later using the Secrets .JSON file.
To learn how to use the .JSON file, see How to import SSID passwords in a .JSON file.

1.2. How to connect multiple devices using a .csv file

  1. Log in to Insight Webportal on your desktop.
  2. Under Manage, select Connectivity.
  3. At the top of the page, click Connect Device.
A modal Choose your Device window displays.
  4. Select Gateway and click Next.
  5. In the Name section, click Upload csv file.
The modal Upload .CSV file window displays.
  6. Click Upload and select a file from the target location.
The list of devices from the .csv file displays.
  7. Validate the imported devices' information in the list and click Next. The WIFI Connection section displays.
  8. Type in your router's/network's SSID (Network) and Password, and click Next.
    The Provision section displays.
  9. Scan the QR code on the screen to enable your Gateway as a Mass Storage Device.
  10. Click Download to export your Provisioning package in a .zip file and click Done.
The provisioning package (.zip) downloads with a provisioning file for each device.

Step 2: Apply the provisioning package

  1. Connect the Gateway's USB cable to your desktop.
The Gateway boots up in about 1 minute. The USB LED glows green constantly.
  2. Scan the QR code on the Gateway with your scanner.
The scanner connects to the Gateway and the Scanner LED glows green.
  3. Scan the QR code below to enable the Gateway as a Mass Storage Device.
    EnableMassStorage
The Gateway displays as a Mass Storage Device on your desktop.
  4. Unzip the downloaded provisioning package.
The extracted .zip file contains one provisioning file for every registered Gateway.

Note: If the SSID Password is not provided, you need to enter the password for every SSID in the secret.json file.
To learn how to use the .JSON file, see SSID Password in a .JSON File.

  5. Copy the corresponding provisioning file (and Secrets .JSON) to your Gateway Mass Storage Device.

  6. Eject the Gateway Mass Storage Device.
The upload takes a few seconds. All three LEDs flash green when done.
The Gateway automatically connects to Wi-Fi and Insight Webportal and Cloud LED glows green.
